Copilot free trial fails to reset after monthly limit exceeded #171815
-
Select Topic AreaQuestion Copilot Feature AreaGeneral BodyHello GitHub Support, I noticed an issue with my Copilot usage reset date. On August 31, the message showed that my premium requests allowance would reset on September 1, 2025. However, once the date changed to September 1, it suddenly showed that the reset will happen on October 1, 2025 instead. This seems incorrect, and I believe there may be a bug in how the reset date is being displayed. Could you please clarify this and confirm when my allowance is supposed to reset? Thank you for your help. Best regards, |

I was just hit by similar issue. I'm using GitHub Copilot free plan exclusively in IntelliJ IDEA (current version of plugin is 1.5.57-243, https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/17718-github-copilot). Today is 01 of October. Whole previous month the plugin gave me steady pace of inline suggestions. It gave me some more suggestions today in the morning. Starting somewhere around 12pm UTC it suddenly shows me:
The portal page https://github.com/settings/copilot/features shows me that I used all 100% of my monthly quota and reset will happen in 31 days.
So it's either:

I am experiencing the same issue. I assumed that my monthly quota would be reset on October 26, 2025. On that day, however, I saw that the monthly quota would be reset on November 26, 2025. I fear that I will receive another message that the monthly quota will be reset on December 26, if I do not solve this issue this month. How can this be fixed? |

I have the same issue. I started using GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio in February on a Free subscription, after I handed in my work computer with their paid subscription. After about two weeks I had used the free requests. That's okay, it's how it is. It showed 100% requests and about 20% code completions and "Limits refresh on 28-02-2026". I was waiting for March 1st, but then it just still shows same 100%/20% usages and "Limits refesh on 30-03-2026". I have NOT been using any requests in March, as it has stated that I've reached the montly limit. Have I somehow used up more than twice the monthly allowance before limit kicked in, so the overdraft skips to the next month? Or is the resetting just not working? |

I'm facing the same issue. I should have been reset on March 18; now it has just pushed back the reset date, but usage is still at 100% |

To all people still encountering this issue: I would suggest you to contact support. I don't think they are looking here. My requests have finally reset way too late, but I don't know if it happened automatically or someone from support read my request for support and just fixed it. I haven't heard anything from them. But the more people sending requests for support on this, the more focus it will get. |

I've got a reply from the GitHub support team on the support ticket that I requested on March 4th.

This seems to be a fairly common issue with the Copilot free trial/free tier, and you’re definitely not alone. From what others have reported, the monthly limit should reset automatically at the start of a new calendar month (UTC time), but in some cases it doesn’t — either due to a delay, timezone mismatch, or an actual bug in the system. ([Visual Studio Code]1) There are also multiple reports where the reset date keeps moving forward without actually resetting usage, which suggests this might be a known issue affecting several users. ([GitHub]2) 🔧 Things you can try
🧠 If it still doesn’t workAt that point, it’s likely not on your side. The best option is to: They can check your account state and manually reset it if needed. Overall, this looks less like a usage mistake and more like a quota/reset bug or billing sync issue. Hopefully GitHub improves reliability here soon 🚀 |

I’m experiencing the exact same issue. My quota was supposed to reset on March 16th, but it just pushed the date back to April 16th while remaining at 100% usage. It seems like a recurring bug for the Free Plan. Thanks to everyone for sharing the support ticket workaround—I'll try contacting them too! |
