Really promising direction. Local-first + optional API keys is honestly the right balance for privacy and flexibility. The offline fallback, OS credential vault support, and voice pack system are all strong decisions early on. A few ideas that could make Voxel even stronger:
The project already feels more practical than a lot of “AI assistant” projects because the focus is clearly on privacy, modularity, and reliability instead of just UI polish. Nice work shipping an actual preview this early. |

Thanks! That makes sense. I ended up making the tool/plugin registry one of the main v0.02 priorities, along with a few first built-in tools like calculator, local time, and small talk routing. The goal is to keep the assistant modular so future features like automation, memory, and community-made tools do not have to be hardcoded into the command router. I also added a local memory foundation, memory view/delete UI, memory search, low-resource mode, TTS barge-in, and a better debug/latency panel for v0.02. I agree that plugins/tools are probably the right long-term foundation, so I’m going to keep building in that direction. Anyways, 0.02 is out, if you want to see what I added see the new changelog file Thanks alot for the feedback by the way :). |

Hey everyone — I just released an early v0.01 preview of Voxel.
Voxel is a local-first AI assistant that runs on localhost. The goal is to make a private desktop assistant that can work locally by default, while still allowing optional bring-your-own API key providers.
Current features:
It is still early and very much a developer preview, but I’m looking for feedback on the architecture, setup flow, and what features should come next.
