For the contribution to the innovation, the following was mentioned: Thomas was among the top three contributors and was editor of ISO/IEC 23000-19 (the CMAF Standard) Amd.1, Amd.3, 2nd edition, all Amendments of 2nd edition and 3rd edition as well as Amd.1 of 3rd edition. He was also supporting interop, implementation, and conformance efforts for CMAF adoption in CTA WAVE, DVB, 3GPP, ATSC and DASH-IF. Show less

Together with Jon Piesing who leads the test suite development, I as the chair of the CTA WAVE task force was accepting the award from our outstanding CTA officer Alexandra Blasgen. Very cool stuff, we worked on this more than 5 years and it is an amazing piece of work - stay tuned. Dr. Thomas Stockhammer was the main contributor and editor of the MPEG-DASH standard and 3GPP-DASH specification. He ensured the successful collaboration between MPEG and 3GPP to complete the project into a unified DASH technology. He also advocated the use of DASH as key enabler for multi-platform TV distribution.

With all the hype and multiple companies interested in this work, it has taken Thomas' industry leadership, vision, and tremendous amount of hard work to manage all the industry & standards efforts inside and outside of SA4 so that they are well organized and also supportive of QC's main objectives in this space. Description: Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) have just recently specified the use Raptor codes in their mobile broadcast file delivery engine. Until today, investigations of the applicability of these codes to the mentioned systems have been carried out by assuming almost exclusively quite simple loss models such as statistically independent radio packet losses. Furthermore, the combination and tradeoffs between physical layer parameters such as transmit power or physical layer for-ward error correction code rates in system design has been completely ignored. In this work we investigate the end-to-end system performance by analyzing the trade-off between physical layer parameters and application layer code. Mr. Stockhammer is the Qualcomm representative to the INCITS/L3.1 MPEG task group and JTC 1/SC 29/WG11. He has demonstrated great dedication and skill on a number of project, most notably being the primary project editor for IS 23009, Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP.. In this role, Thomas has edited an excellent specification, integrating and synthesizing text, clarifying, and making sure that details are appropriately addressed, been a significant contributor to the US positions and comments that helped refine that specification and helped drive the process of enquiry, both for use- cases and technical solutions.
This work started in 2010 and the main specification is already published. This is a major achievement since the suite of specifications is so large and though there were many contributors, the resulting specifications are in no small part thanks to Mr. Stockhammer.
