The IANA functions are performed by\u00a0Public Technical Identifiers (<a href=\"https:\/\/pti.icann.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PTI<\/a>) under <a href=\"https:\/\/pti.icann.org\/agreements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contracts and sub-contracts<\/a> with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.icann.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICANN)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the IANA functions, PTI allocates IP address space from the pool of unallocated addresses to the RIRs according to their needs and in line with current <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nro.net\/policy\/global\/\">global numbering policy<\/a>. PTI also maintains a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">registry<\/a> of the IP address blocks and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) that have been allocated to each RIR.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each RIR makes its own requests for IP addresses and ASNs based on regional needs, and the allocations are made directly to each RIR.<\/li>\n<li>The RIRs then assign IP addresses to their members, such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs), or to National Internet Registries (NIRs).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>IANA Service Level Agreement (SLA)<\/h3>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nro.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/SLA-Executed-ICANN-RIRS.pdf\">SLA<\/a> between the five RIRs and the operator of the IANA functions was signed in 2016.<\/p>\n<h3>The IANA Numbering Services Review Committee (IANA RC)<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nro.net\/accountability\/operational\/iana-numbering-services-review-committee\/\">IANA RC<\/a>&#8216;s function is to advise and assist the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nro.net\/about\/executive-council\/\"> NRO Executive Council (NRO EC)<\/a> in its periodic review of the service level of the IANA Numbering Services provided to the Internet Number Community.<\/p>\n<h3>IANA Functions Policy<\/h3>\n<p>The RIR communities are responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nro.net\/policy\/global\/\">developing global Internet number policy<\/a>, which includes policies governing the management of the global pools of IP addresses and ASNs, as described in the <a href=\"https:\/\/aso.icann.org\/about-the-aso\/aso-memorandum-of-understanding\">ASO Memorandum of Understanding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The IANA Oversight Transition<\/h3>\n<p>From 2002-2016, the IANA functions were performed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icann.org\/\">ICANN<\/a> under a contract awarded by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntia.doc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NTIA<\/a>), an agency in the United States&#8217; Department of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2016, PTI\u00a0was incorporated as an affiliate of\u00a0<abbr title=\"Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers\">ICANN<\/abbr>, and, through contracts and subcontracts with\u00a0<abbr class=\"\" title=\"Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers\">ICANN<\/abbr>, began performing the\u00a0<abbr class=\"\" title=\"Internet Assigned Numbers Authority\">IANA<\/abbr>\u00a0functions\u00a0in October 2016. \u00a0Find out more about the RIRs&#8217; involvement in the IANA Stewardship Transition in our transition\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nro.net\/internet-governance\/iana\/iana-stewardship-transition\/stewardship-transition-archive\/\">archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>More Information<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nro.net\/sla-for-iana-numbering-services\/\">IANA Service Level Agreement (SLA)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nro.net\/internet-governance\/iana\/iana-stewardship-transition\/stewardship-transition-archive\/\">IANA Stewardship Transition Archive<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions are a set of administrative tasks critical to ensuring the global coordination of the DNS root zone, IP addressing and protocol parameters.
