Organized in 1950, the mission of the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society (NNVHS) is to collect, preserve, and disseminate information and material of every nature relating to the history, antiquities, and literature of the Counties of Northumberland, Lancaster, Westmoreland, Stafford, Richmond, and King George.
The NNVHS headquarters is centrally located in Virginia’s Northern Neck at 15482 Kings Highway (Route 3), Montross, Virginia. The Headquarters is the home to our office and renowned History and Genealogy Library with over 2,500 volumes of research materials. The collection includes vital records, family histories, immigration lists, census records, reference works, military histories, church and cemetery guides, and histories of Northern Neck towns, cities, and counties. The NNVHS has published the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Magazine (NNVHM) each year since 1951. The unique and educational collection of journals contain original articles and documents and speeches relating to the history of the people, places, and events of the Northern Neck. Magazines are available in many public and private libraries throughout the United States. The Magazine is distributed annually to members as a benefit of NNVHS membership.
Annual events hosted by the NNVHS include the commemorations of the 1766 Leedstown Resolutions; Independence Day Celebration at Burnt House Field & Yeocomico Church Service; and Journeys to Freedom: 1791 Deed of Gift by Robert Carter III and the Nomini Hall Enslaved and Free Community. Membership meetings with business session, noted speaker, and luncheon are held in May and October.
Each year, the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society gives back to our local Northern Neck community through the following programs:
The John Paul Hanbury (JPH) Award is a signature award program of the NNVHS. The Award encourages and recognizes outstanding restoration or renovation of properties of historic or architectural interest in Virginia’s Northern Neck. JPH Award winner(s) are announced each fall at the Society’s annual fall membership meeting.
The NNVHS’s Robert O. Norris Jr. (RON) Scholarship Program awards two Northern Neck high school graduating seniors a $1,000 (one thousand dollars) scholarship each, to help students with the costs of continuing education. The scholarships are awarded each year during the NNVHS spring membership meeting.
