Obi-Wan Kenobi, also known as Ben Kenobi, is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe. He is a Jedi Master, who originally served on the Jedi Council. Later, he would train Luke Skywalker in his quest to becoming a Jedi, and aiding the rebel effort against the evil Galactic Empire.
Alongside Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, R2-D2 and C-3PO, he is one of the few major characters to appear in all six of the original Star Wars movies. He is portrayed in the Original Trilogy by Alec Guinness, in the Prequel Trilogy by Ewan McGregor, and voiced by James Arnold Taylor in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.
In A New Hope, Obi-Wan is known to locals as "Ben" Kenobi; a lonely old man about whom not much is known. After a droid reveals a message intended for Ben from a beautiful princess, Luke Skywalker contacts him in hopes of delivering the message. There, Ben reveals Luke's father was a Jedi as he once was, and gifts to him, his lightsaber. After discovering his uncle and aunt were murdered by Stormtroopers and his farm set ablaze, Luke sets out with Ben to travel to Alderaan in hopes of stopping the Empire.
Aboard the Death Star, Ben helps the Millennium Falcon escape from capture by disabling the space station's force field. He encounters Darth Vader and the two have an intense battle. Ben sacrifices himself in order to buy time for Luke, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, C3-PO and R2-D2 to escape aboard the Millenium Falcon. He later appears to Luke in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as an apparition, aiding Yoda in training Luke, and providing valuable advice.
In The Phantom Menace, 32 years before A New Hope, Obi-Wan is the apprentice of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. The two discover a local Tatooinian boy, Anakin Skywalker, has an extraordinary Midichlorian count, one of the Chosen One, a prophecised being spoken amongst the Jedi who will bring balance to the Force. However, Qui-Gon is killed during a duel with Sith lord Darth Maul, and with his dying breath, pleads with Obi-Wan to train the young Skywalker. Obi-Wan agrees, and later concinces the Jedi Council to allow him to train Anakin to be a Jedi.
In Attack of the Clones, Obi-Wan and Anakin are shown to be inseperable, undertaking missions together with great success. Anakin falls in love with Padmé Amidala, a Galactic senator whom he met in The Phantom Menace. Obi-Wan later discovers a clone army being grown in secret by the cloners of the planet Kamino, believing it to be a Seperatist plot. He then takes part in the Battle of Geonosis, at the beginning of the Clone Wars.
In Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan serves as a Jedi General during the Clone Wars. Alongside Anakin, he defeats the Seperatist leader General Grievous on the planet Utapau. Despite Obi-Wan's best efforts, Anakin is seduced by the Dark Side, having been plagued by visions of his wife, Padmé, suffering immensely. He is further seduced by the efforts of Chancellor Palpatine, the leader of the Galactic Republic, and in secret, a Sith Lord. Obi-Wan confronts him on the planet Mustafar and the two engage in a tense battle. Obi-Wan defeats Anakin and leaves him alive. After the fall of the Jedi Order and the rise of the Galactic Empire, Obi-Wan goes into hiding on Tatooine to look over Luke Skywalker.
Obi-Wan later stars in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
